Belfy of Bruges

Back in February, my friend and I drove to Bruges for an overnighter. What a charming city! This Belgian city is know for its system of canals, which has led many to refer to it as “Venice of the North”. While we were visiting, the canals were frozen over and kids were ice-skating all through the city. The tallest tower you see here is the Belfry of Bruges. It was added to the main market square around 1240, when Bruges was prospering as an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry. After a devastating fire in 1280, the tower was largely rebuilt. The city archives, however, were forever lost to the flames.
